Dr. Smith is a Board Certified Prosthodontist. A prosthodontist is a dental specialist who restores and replaces missing teeth. After completing four years of dental school, Dr. Smith received three additional years of specialized training in an American Dental Association accredited graduate education program. He also successfully passed the Board Certification examination and at present is the only Board Certified Prosthodontist in Sarasota. He must re-certify every eight years to maintain his "Board Certified" status. This rigorous training and expertise provide prosthodontists a special understanding of the dynamics of smiles, the preservation of healthy mouths, and reconstructive dentistry.

You may ask, "What is the difference between a prosthodontist and a cosmetic dentist?" The American Dental Association recognizes nine dental specialties and cosmetic dentistry is not one of them. Prosthodontists receive extensive training and expertise in dental esthetics and creating beautiful, lasting smiles during graduate programs lasting 3 years. Cosmetic dentists receive training during seminars or courses of study-but this training is usually limited to weekend or weekly courses.

A prosthodontist is considered the "architect" of your dental treatment. Dr. Smith will plan your treatment with a vision of both the esthetics of your smile and the improved function of your bite. He is an expert in dental rehabilitation mastering procedures such as crowns, veneers, fixed bridges, implant restorations, removable partial dentures, complete dentures, and TMJ issues. Dr. Smith develops a plan of treatment customized for each individual patient and often quarterbacks a team of specialists that may participate in your care.
